Their latest offering, the new Riviera 38 Open Flybridge is a two-cabin, one-bathroom model that continues the millennium styling introduced in 2000. Riviera expects to build on the success of the Riviera 37 Open Flybridge, which was launched in 2001 and which has since sold more than 260 craft, with the new 38.
Externally, the new 38 continues to evolve Riviera’s trademark styling, with tinted glass windscreen panels fitting together in front of the windscreen mullions to give a modern all-glass look. The low-profile Light RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) hardtop makes for a sleek appearance whilst allowing wider profiled weather ‘clears’.
Forward, there is a through-bowsprit anchor system offering greater strength and protection to the bowsprit as well as a sophisticated look when the anchor is housed. There is also the option to have a bow-thruster fitted.
Aft, the swim platform includes an integrated swim rail and an extendable swim ladder that is concealed by a hatch when not in use.
The flybridge features new style helm chairs with high backs, armrests and footrests for extra comfort. The aft rail has been ‘kicked’ back to allow room to move around the helm chairs.
The helm station is clean and robust with a built-in stylish dash console. An electronic engine management system makes for a user-friendly interface.
The cockpit was designed to meet the requirements of the laid-back cruising boater or the serious game fisherman. The transom door hinges outwards ensuring a good seal whenbacking up hard and is fitted with a lift-up bridge.
The cockpit floor has a fully integrated self-draining system running around its perimeter and back to the transom. Toe kicks are moulded under the lockers which add extra comfort when fishing.
Access to the engine room is through a double moulded hatch next to the saloon entryway. This incorporates a sink in the top with a closed moulded lid covering it.
Twin Volvo turbo diesel engines rated at 272kW/370hp are standard on the Riviera 38 Open Flybridge. Options include twin Cummins QSB 380 diesels rated at 280kW/380hp or twin Cummins QSB 425 diesels rated at 313kW/425hp. We found the craft handled well even in the moderately severe seas we have just experienced here in Phuket. This is in part due to the Low Drag Hull Trimming feature. With the push of a button the QL series interceptor-type trim tabs provide precise low drag settings for optimising hull engagement.
Fuel storage is 1,450 litres and water capacity is 460 litres, which is stored in dual tanks linked to a gauge located in the galley.
The saloon features a separate L-shaped lounge and dinette while the galley has a solid surface benchtop with an electric dual element cooktop and stainless steel appliances. A unique design detail is the lowered servery to the saloon, for convenience when entertaining aboard. High gloss cherrywood upper pelmets run the full length of the saloon.
The master bedroom with its island bed has lots of mirrors and enough hanging space for extended cruising. The bathroom design has a feel of quality – satin chrome fittings and a solid surface vanity top.
Overall, we would say that the Riviera 38 Open Flybridge is a well thought out cruising boat and has all the features needed to chase those big fish.
