The BMW R 1200 GS
Possibly the best bike in the world...
The ultimate machine for those who demand the very best − cutting edge technologies combined with the guarantee of German build quality. The specification is outstanding. Here's a taste of what this 200 kilometre-an-hour, 100-horsepower beast has to offer.
BMW R 1200 GS

The engine: The new state-of the-art Boxer engine is lighter yet more powerful than its predecessor, in spite of incorporating a new balancer shaft to dampen vibration. The BMS engine management system now includes the choke function; knock suppression and new dual ignition technology deliver massive torque with vibration-free, silky-smooth performance at all engine speeds. Performance is constantly monitored by a sophisticated range of sensors that also optimise fuel consumption. Oxygen sensors and a closed loop, 3-way catalytic convertor mean the engine meets all emission regulations, existing or proposed. This unit is lean as well as green!

BMW R 1200 GSPower is transmitted to the road wheels via a hydraulic clutch, six-speed constant mesh gearbox and shaft drive. Gear shifts are fed via special sliding sleeves which ensure short shift travel combined with minimal operating pressures.

The brakes: With all this power, the ability to stop is crucial and the BMW 1200 does not disappoint. The proven Motorad brake system has been enhanced; brake caliper piston sizes are bigger and the brake line distributor has been elegantly incorporated into the lower fork bridge. The integral ABS allows precise control thanks to the pure linear relationship between the lever pressure and braking force. The popular integral system has been retained so the rider can apply braking to both wheels via the handlebar lever or just to the rear wheel with the foot brake. The ABS system is now 50% lighter and is almost maintenance-free.

The new ASC3i [Automatic Stability Control] operates together with the ABS to eliminate wheelspin on wet or uneven surfaces, but the system can be deactivated at the touch of a button even while the bike is in motion.

BMW R 1200 GSThe suspension: At the front, the BMW Telefork design features exceptionally sensitive response and a high level of longitudinal stiffness, delivering an excellent, stable ride. The spring pre-load is adjustable for nine settings and has a travel of 190 mm providing plenty of leeway on or off the road. Brake squat is minimal.

At the rear, the Motorrad Paralever technology takes advantage of innovative lightweight construction techniques to minimize unsprung mass. The torque support which counteracts load-change reactions is mounted above the swing arm, improving off-road capabilities. The suspension and damping functions are performed by a WAD strut arrangement, the compression stage increasing with the spring travel. This makes for an exceptionally sensitive response even under the extreme stresses off-road. The system delivers outstanding comfort and optimum ground contact whether riding solo or with a pillion passenger and luggage.

The frame: Entirely high tensile steel, the triple-section design consists of front and rear sub-frames joined by the load-bearing engine-gearbox unit. To increase chassis rigidity, the swing arm is mounted directly onto the rear frame.

This grid tubing steel frame is an outstanding example of stable, lightweight design, using sophisticated computer calculations to optimize steel thickness and tube diameters.

The seat height is adjustable and its shape is ergonomically optimal. The wind-tunnel designed windshield offers five manually adjustable tilt angles and provides excellent wind and weather protection.

BMW R 1200 GS (1) Safety guaranteed: The new BMW Motorrad Integral ABS. (2) The anti-theft warning system. (3) The TPC (Tyre Pressure Control) system uses sensors to monitor pressure.

The headlights: The BMW R 1200 GS shows its membership of the GS boxer family with signature asymmetric dual headlamps, incorporating reflectors designed as free-form surfaces. This highly efficient lighting design gives good recognisability of the machine by other road users and outstanding road surface illumination – a safety bonus for both day and night riding.
