2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Solid steel technology, silken performance and head-turning style. Let’s take a look at the latest from Mitsubishi’s stable.

2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Mitsubishi has introduced the latest version of the Pajero Sport with a great variety of new features including a fully re-engineered chassis and the advanced Super Select four wheel drive system with ‘All Wheel Control’ technology. With this model, Mitsubishi seeks to realise high levels of durability and reliability.

The Pajero Sport is based on an all-new ladder-frame chassis. Mitsubishi says that torsional rigidity in this frame is 50% greater than the previous model. This improves the vehicle's performance in off-road situations, and greatly enhances handling and ride comfort on tarmac. The new Pajero Sport SUV is also larger than its predecessor, with an overall length of 4,695 mm (compared with 4,620 mm for the old model), overall width of 1,815 mm (1,775 mm), overall height of 1,800 mm (1,730 mm) and wheelbase of 2,800 mm (2,725 mm).

The new model features dynamic and sporty exterior lines complemented by a chic body style. Chromium body detailing and side mirrors give the unit a sleek appeal. Projector-style head lights ensure excellent vision for night driving. Attractively designed tail lights and an additional third rear light and spoiler combine to give an appealing rear aspect. Overall the sports design sends a strong message of advanced performance and creates a compelling statement of safety, comfort and purpose – a far cry from the ‘flying brick’ image of the original models. The Sport rides on specially sculpted alloy wheels and fat 265/70R16 tyres. 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The first impression of the spacious interior is of top quality materials and finish. The deep textured black décor, subtly picked out with matt-grey and metallic detailing, is superb. It begs you to run your fingers over it. The leather-covered gear selector confirms the ‘Sports’ theme as do the deep, contoured beige seats. The driver’s seat has electrically powered adjustment in all directions. There’s a separate air conditioning feed to the third row of seats. The front console is dominated by a state-of-the-art Alpine sound system offering AM/FM/DVD/CD/MP3 and incorporating a seven-inch IMT (Intelligent Magic Touch) monitor screen.

The vast interior space allows for, either a two-row (five passengers with 60:40 foldaway style) or three-row (seven passengers with 50:50 foldaway style) seating configuration, which is further adjustable for five usage layouts. The interior is practical as well as beautiful. The seats are trimmed with water resistant material. The luggage compartment floor can be hosed out. The front seatbacks can recline fully to provide a comfortable sleeping platform in an emergency. The rear seats also have a 150 mm slide travel to accommodate awkward loads.

The Pajero Sport has a sophisticated suspension set-up with independent double wishbone links and coil springs at the front and tri-link control-arm architecture at the rear.

The Sport comes with a choice of two engines – the 2.5 litre, 140hp DI-D hyper common rail DOHC 16-valve with turbo intercooler and the 165hp 3.2 litre, DI-D hyper common rail DOHC 16-valve with turbo intercooler. Both power units can be matched with Mitsubishi’s patented Sportronic transmission enhanced with automatic INVECS-II technology. 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The All Wheel Control Super Select 4WD driveline is designed to feed optimal torque to the road in all traction conditions. The transmission train offers two and four-wheel drive, high and low range and a differential lock for seriously slippery situations. Front disk brakes and rear drum brakes with EBFD (electronic brake force distribution) give maximum stopping power.

The new Mitsubishi Sport is a serious peace of machinery designed to go anywhere whatever the conditions. At the same time, it offers saloon car comfort on the highway and has the well-muscled good looks of a thoroughbred.
