The structure of the Thai import tariff system has always favoured locally manufactured vehicles over imports. Further concessions are allowed for diesel pick-ups, on the basis that they will be used for commercial purposes, the development of which the Thai government obviously wishes to encourage. The major motor manufacturers have not been slow to use this concession to their market advantage. Over the years, the humble pick-up concept has enjoyed an exciting re-invention, and now appeals to more than just builders and merchants. There is no doubt that the Mitsubishi Triton has been the most successful, in this approach. More than thirty thousand units have been sold since its introduction three years ago.
The Triton, which is manufactured at Mitsubishi’s plant in Laem Chabang, has had a complete makeover for 2009. The trademark Mitsubishi star now dominates an even sexier and more curvaceous cab, matched with a dreamy body. The front and rear bumper profiles have been increased and indicator and foglamps have been beautifully re-designed and integrated into the front and rear aspects. Anodised aluminium side-steps are sleek features which enhance the vehicle’s silhouette. They also of course, facilitate getting in and out of what is quite a tall vehicle.
The Triton will be offered in three configurations – Single cab, Mega
cab and Double Cab. The first is powered by a 2.5 litre engine and
the other options, by a 3.2 litre unit. Both are newly engineered
turbo-charged, common-rail diesels which are designed to turn out
enhanced power outputs combined with low fuel consumption and
quiet operation. Both units meet international emission standards.
Manual and automatic transmission options are available.
Do not be misled be the Triton’s pretty looks. Beneath its smooth skin is a tough and ruggedly engineered machine – expertise that Mitsubishi has learned in the design office, as well as in successful participation in the Paris–Dakar rally, for many years. The four wheel drive system is a joy to use. The suspension has all the sophistication of a passenger car, combined with sturdily built coil springs at the front and crossover frames at the rear.
As always, first-class crashworthiness has been engineered in with the Rise body safety system. ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, is standard. Front disc brakes incorporate cooling vents to eliminate any fade. Front and rear bumper reinforcement, side impact beams, air-bag protection and automatic foldaway safety belts are standard. The rack and pinion power-assisted steering is light and precise, which offers with an impressive turning circle, for what is quite a large vehicle.
With such a handsome exterior one would expect a matching cabin interior and the new Triton does not disappoint. Christened the 'Silver Decoration', the best-in-class appointments are as good as, if not better than many a saloon car. The dash is dominated by a chromed centre panel which mounts a CD/DVD player, with MP3Div X capability, and an AUX connection. The top-of-the-range models incorporate an LCD display system with comprehensive multi-functional read- outs and external safety feedback. Central locking, remote control key and safety-locked electric windows are standard on all models.
The Mitsubishi Triton is the first pick-up in Thailand to be fitted with the company’s patented ETAC (Electronic Time and Alarm Control) system. This computer controlled marvel controls door locks and alarm settings, which means that your beautiful shiny new Triton will still be in the car park where you left it, when you return.
Even in these difficult times Mitsubishi are targeting monthly sales of 3500 units a month – who would want to argue with them?
