Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed

Mitsubishi has now released the latest in its range of Sport Utility Vehicles. The Pajero Exceed is an impressive progression from the three previous generations. This model is squarely aimed at the full size SUV market.

Exterior
The new Pajero appearance is sleek and purposeful and follows the traditional design keys of its ancestors – short overhangs, upright windscreen, high roof, huge wheel arches and heavy treaded tyres. The style is evolutionary rather than revolutionary and will appeal to drivers who actually intend to drive off-road. The front aspect is of course built around Mitsubishi’s trade mark three-point logo, bracketed by hefty air intakes with huge headlight clusters and separate spotlights. The Pajero will certainly catch your attention, if it suddenly looms in your rear view mirror. This is not to say that the car is all square, solid steel. The profile is nicely proportioned and includes a rear spoiler, nice chrome detailing, and sculpted side paneling. There is an integral chrome roof rack fitted as standard. With the metallic paint finishes, the Pajero looks will stand in comparison with all its competitors. The side mirrors incorporate direction indicating repeaters. The headlights incorporate a self-cleaning function and automatically adjust for ride level changes and have light sensor technology to switch on and off automatically.

Interior
As you would expect, the interior is spacious − even cavernous − with lots of cleverly designed pockets, trays and holders for storage of the inevitable paraphernalia of travel. Hugely comfortable seats finished in real leather, combine with beige tones and woodgrain panelling to project an ambience of luxury and opulence which puts the Pajero up there with the X5, Lexus and Range Rover. The interior is simply magnificent. The spacious feel is augmented by a large sunroof with electrically powered slide controls allowing for the adjustment of the sunlight filter and wind deflector.

When you sit behind the leather-bound four spoke wheel and engage drive with the matching gear selector, the Pajero offers an impressive menu of electrically powered functions, ranging from eight-direction seat adjustment, through wheel-mounted audio panel to speed control. The high driving position gives an excellent elevated view of the road ahead and all-round visibility is excellent. Side mirrors are electrically adjustable and there is a rear mirror for safe reversing.Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed

The instrument panel is comprehensive with high contrast dials and the central display incorporates the climate control and high-end Rockford Acoustic Design Premium Sound system. The second row of seats has the now universal 60:40 split for accommodating those awkward loads (in the Pajero they would have to be very awkward). The third row of seats is foldaway and removable subject to load requirements. Altogether a seating configuration for all seasons – including everything from camping to house moving!

Capacity
Under the weight-saving aluminium bonnet is the heart of the Pajero – the massive 3.8-litre V6 MIVEC gasoline unit transmitting power through the 5-gear INVECS-II Sportronic transmission. Yes, that’s right, we said ‘three point eight litres’ and ‘gasoline’. This is the heaviest Pajero yet but it is also the most powerful – the engine turns out 250 horses at 6000 rpm and has a torque curve which would be the envy of most sport utility vehicles. Matching gearbox ratios to performance is always something of a fine art with four-by fours, and Mitsubishi’s offering seems to be about right. The five-speed gearbox makes the new Pajero easy to handle in traffic but the driver can change from auto to manual at the touch of a button, and then has the option of high or low range modes. This is based on Mitsubishi’s patented AWC (all wheel control) technology and incorporates ASTC (Active Stability and Traction Control). Got yourself into a slightly sticky situation? Don’t worry, select the Differential lock and glide to safety.Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed

Safety
The integral ladderframe/monocoque chassis design has 50% more rigidity than its predecessor and the vehicle handles predictably and surefootedly both on and off the road. Full dual air-bag protection is standard.

The Pajero Exceed was awarded 6-star safety certification by the Japanese JNCAP.
