There's nothing like a day on the water, especially around Phuket with so many beautiful beaches, islands, hongs and exotic hideaways to explore.

Bob Speed

Where are you from and when did you come to live in Phuket?
I was born in Twickenham – just outside of London. I first moved to Thailand from Hong Kong in the late 1980s – we were working on a huge mixed-use development project on Rama 3 Road, in Bangkok. Had you been here before? Yes, I’ve made many trips to Phuket over the last 20 years, mostly for golfing holidays. How did you start the business? I was approached to set up a joint venture and jumped at the chance. It was always my intention to work here.

Tell us about Studio906.
The company has been operating for around 18 months. The joint venture materialised after meeting Julian from DCM solutions.

What made you choose the name?
We wanted a name that would encourage people to ask that question. It’s a play on the way most local architectural firms name their companies.

How do you approach your job?
It’s important for me to have a great relationship with all our clients. I strive at all times to embrace the principles of professional conduct – integrity, competence and relationships. Having said that, in today’s business environment the most important thing is perseverence!

What does it take to be successful in your line of work?
You’ve got to design solutions which are profitable, comply with the building code, and are at the same time aesthetic and environmentally sound.

Could you tell us about your private life?
My wife and I have a six-year old daughter, who attends Kajonkiet School. We bought a house in Kathu, which is close to the golf course and convenient for schools and shopping.

What do you like and dislike about living in Phuket?
Phuket has great infrastructure and facilities. It’s also able to withstand macro-economic problems. The main problem is the lack of public transport.

Where is your favourite place in Phuket?
Kata Beach. It’s perfect for swimming, walking and jogging. I enjoy taking my daughter to Kata beach most weekends.

What do you do with your free time?
If I get free time I like to sit on the beach or watch a good movie.

Business: Managing Director, Anchan Villas

Joop Saetiw

Would you tell us about your background?
I was born in Phuket. I attended Phuket Wittayalai School, and then went on to study Tourism and Hotel Management at Phuket Vocational College. At the same time, I helped out with the family’s restaurant.

Recently I started a property company, Anchan Villas.

How did that come about?
I became interested in this area because of the island’s property boom. Together with a friend from Hong Kong who had a similar interest, we analysed the market and found that 80% of foreigners were looking to buy houses as an investment, with a view also to having a retirement home.

To meet this demand we designed Anchan Villas in a Balinese style, with the bedrooms separate from the main house, to give a resort feel.

Did you find it difficult making the change from restaurant owner to property developer?
Not really. Property development’s certainly a challenge, but I enjoy the chance to be creative in a very competitive environment.

What’s your approach to life?
I like to be straightforward and use logic to solve problems.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket?
I live in my own house in Laguna. It’s about 10 years old. I’m planning to build a new house in the same area.

Tell us about your family.
I have a sister who is 27 years old and she works in the family restaurant.

How is Phuket in your view?
Well, it’s the most expensive place in Thailand, but I still think it’s the ideal place for visitors and locals, alike.

What do you like and dislike about Phuket?
Well, Phuket’s my home, so naturally I like it. The main problem really, is that it’s become so busy. The roads really aren’t up to the current traffic volumes.

In your opinion, what attracts foreign visitors?
It’s a combination of natural beauty, a great climate and friendly people.

How do you relax?
In the morning, I like to take my motor boat out for a spin. On the weekends, I’ll often go for a round of golf at the Laguna Club. Golf’s a game where you can exercise, improve your concentration and play on your own. Afterwards, you can get to meet with friends in the clubhouse and enjoy their company.
