The contract for the construction of Phuket’s first cricket ground has been awarded. Ground construction was due to start at the end of June with an award for the 250 sqm Club House, on two floors, to follow in late July. Both contracts will be completed in time for the coming cricket season in November OR the ground will be completed in November, with the Clubhouse substanially complete.
The 10 rai ground in the lakes area of Baan Lipon, to be known as the ACG Cricket and Sports Ground, is mainly for cricket, but other field sports will be welcome. The ground and clubhouse will be maintained by the Phuket Cricket Group, the official umbrella for cricket on the island. The land owner’s representative, Alan Cooke MBE, has financed the facilities, and has for the past six years been the main sponsor of cricket on Phuket. Alan is confident that: “The ACG will, in a small way, do for cricket what the reduction in boat tax did for marine tourism”.
The ACG is the official venue for the Thai Youth Games Cricket in March 2012.
A two match visit is scheduled for February by the MCC.
