| Among the mountains. Is this the regatta for you? |

If you haven’t yet registered, you should. Now in its 11th year, the Phang Nga Bay Regatta (PNBR) is the most unusual – and the most magical – of yachting events. PNBR 2008 sets sail on 7 February from Ao Po’s Chandara Resort and returns to Nai Harn Bay (via Chong Lat, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi) on 11 February. Registration is on 6 February at Chandara.
Dubbed by Asia Pacific Tropical Homes as “The reluctant regatta”, the event is trying to deal with its growing pains. Started by three friends as a few fun days sailing and a great photo opportunity, the magic of racing around one of the world’s premier sailing areas has attracted more and more entries each year. 2007 saw a record 48 boats.
The original concept of a ‘liveaboard’ regatta has been compromised over the years and routes devised that enabled the less robust to sleep in comfort shoreside. Not so in 2008! According to the regatta’s website, “If we cater to those who need onshore accommodation the routes have to be limited, missing some of the most spectacular locations and robbing the regatta of its adventurous spirit. So if you can’t sleep aboard your boat, this is probably not the regatta for you.”
PNBR 2008 had 34 boats registered as we went to print. Actual entries are likely to be at least 10 more. If sailing amid spectacular scenery, relaxed – not over-serious – racing and beachside parties are your thing, sign up fast… but don’t forget to bring your pillow.
