BEST REGATTA IN ASIA – IT'S OFFICIAL!

Six Senses Phuket Raceweek, now in its eighth year, was recently voted ‘Best Asian Regatta of the Year’ in the Asia Boating Awards 2011, which recognise the cream of Asia’s marine industry across 23 categories, from boat builders to marinas to regattas. The awards ceremony was held at the Gold Coast Yacht & Country Club in Hong Kong on May 6.

Accepting the award on behalf of Image Asia, Karen Leung of international architects Aedas.Phuket Raceweek is only the second regatta in Thailand to win this prestigious award.

“We’re delighted with the accolade, which reflects what our participants have been telling us for the past several years,” said Grenville Fordham, MD of regatta rights owners Image Asia.

A first for Asia!

Mount Gay Rum, famed for its worldwide regatta sponsorship (120 regattas sponsored by Mount Gay each year), has never
before sponsored a regatta in Asia.

by Mount Gay Rum as, not only their first Asian Regatta, but the
chosen event for the launch of Mount Gay in Thailand.

“One of the challenges facing regatta organisers is how to innovate, what to change after seven years of working at ‘getting it right’,” said Grenville Fordham, MD of rights owner and organiser Image Asia.

The racing is professionally run by experienced and popular Race Officer, Simon James and his team. The regatta venue at Evason is second to none. The party food is, without question, the best at any Asian regatta. A crew ticket comes with a full free-flow bar and sumptuous buffet every night. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

In the value-for-money context, the Phuket Raceweek ‘skippers bag’ is turning into a ‘goodie bag’ to top them all, with three quality bags stuffed with original Nautica shirts and Gybe caps for every crew member, as well as Rodenstock sports sunglasses and top-of-the-range Nivea suncare products.

And, to liven up the onshore activities, there’s a cooking competition. Co-sponsor Franke (Swiss manufacturer of high end kitchen equipment) celebrates 100 years in business this year – and is marking that achievement by joining forces with Six Senses Phuket Raceweek. Not such a strange partnership, as Franke is an Official Supplier to the Alinghi Americas Cup team!

As part of its Phuket Raceweek activities, Franke is organising a competition for cooks and chefs who work on the water. Judged by a Thai celebrity chef, and with prizes worth around 100,000 Baht, dazzling dishes will be prepared – on Franke equipment of course – at Evason’s Into the Beach regatta venue.

Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2011 will be held from 20-24 July 2011 at the Evason Phuket & Bon Island on Phuket’s Southeast coast. For more information visit www.phuketraceweek.com or email raceweek@image-asia.com
