Things to do in Phuket

Phuket has received the international sobriquet 'the pearl of the Andaman Sea'. It has become the premier destination for world travellers lured by powdery sand beaches, clear blue seas and a halcyon climate. However there are many other attractions for visitors.

They say, “we are what we eat” and again, “life is a journey”. Those great exotic dishes, which you sample along the way, help to make the trip worthwhile. Here are a few local delicacies.

  • Dim Sum. The Dim Sum is a steamed dumpling filled with a choice of every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury filling and is usually served with Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments. Visit Boonyarat Restaurant for the best. They’ve branches at the vegetable market, the main bus terminal and near Dao Rung School on Chao Fa Road.
  • Kanom Jin Phuket. This is a vermicelli-based dish served with a variety of curry sauces. Try the Kanom Jin restaurant located on Krabi Road. They’ve branches near the Merlin Hotel (Tungka Road), and in front of Prookpanya School on Phuket Road, near the Bang Neaw Chinese shrine.
  • Mee Hok Kian. This is made with large yellow noodles similar to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and pork, fish or squid. Recommended Mee Hok Kian restaurants are Mee Ao Gay, located on Poonpol Road and Mee Sapam at Sapam Village, Thepkasattri Road.
  • Oh Tao. Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian, is a fried oyster dish prepared with eggs, flour, bean sprouts and taro root – a favourite Phuket snack. Look for it at Oh Tao Wongwian Restaurant located near the Clock Tower Circle, Phuket Road or at the Oh Tao Restaurant next to Bang Neaw Municipality School, Phuket Road.
  • Oh Aew. An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied banana-flour mixed with boiled red bean, ice and sweet red syrup. Available everywhere.

The Cable Ski

The Cable Ski
The Cable Ski lake is 410 metres long, 110 metres wide and two metres deep. It was designed specifically for the sports of wakeboarding and water skiing. The set speed for open riding on the lake is 28 km/hr. This is the pace for optimal safety and provides a very enjoyable cruising experience. The venue provides all the equipment you’ll need, including wakeboards, water skis, gloves and vests. Costs range from 500 baht for 30 minutes, up to 1,500 baht for a full day.

Ever wish you could fly like a bird, soaring and diving effortlessly with the wind in your face? It’s called Parasailing. The Parasail is a specially designed parachute, which you wear and you’re then towed behind a speedboat. Suddenly you’re airborne and looking down on mere mortals. Experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective. There are several operators on Patong Beach, and prices start at 2,000 baht.
