Surfing: The good news for surf lovers is that surfing in Phuket is great. The waves at most of the beaches are predictable and fun to ride during this season, so even if you’re a beginner you can find plenty of great beaches like Kalim, Kata, Karon, Patong and Nai Harn where you can hone your skills. These beaches have become popular surfing destinations and now offer surf shops and tuition centres for all skill levels.
Bungy Jump: If the idea of diving head first off a platform 54 metres above the ground sets your pulse racing, then bungy jumping is just what the doctor ordered. You can jump alone or in the company of a friend, and the jump can be set up so that you actually touch the water. Adrenalin junkies apply below!
There are two jumps in Phuket: Jungle Bungy Jump located in Kathu, a 5 minute drive from Patong Beach. Open daily: 9am - 6pm, Tel: +66 (0)76 321351. World Bungy Jump on Soi Kepsup 2, Patong Beach. Open daily: 10am - 7pm.
Cable Ski: Want to escape from the beaches and pools? Here is another great sporting activity for the speed lover. Phuket Cable Ski, situated by a tropical garden in Kathu, is organised on a large lake 410 metres long, 110 metres wide and two metres deep. It was designed specifically for the sports of wakeboarding and water skiing. The set speed for open riding on the lake is 28 km/hr. This is the pace for optimal safety and provides a very enjoyable cruising experience. You can try knee boards, double skis, slalom (single) skis, wake boards, ski disks and trick skis. The venue provides all the equipment you’ll need, including wakeboards, water skis, gloves and vests, or you can bring your own. Costs range from 500 baht for 30 minutes, up to 1,500 baht for a full day. Open daily: 10am - 6.30pm. Tel: +66 (0)76 202525-7.
Parasailing: Ever wish you could fly like a bird, soaring and diving effortlessly with the wind in your face, and experience views of this beautiful island from a new and exciting perspective? Phuket now offers you the chance to do exactly this. It’s called parasailing. The parasail is a specially designed parachute which you wear, and which is then towed behind a speedboat. Suddenly you’re airborne and looking down on mere mortals. There are several operators on Patong Beach and prices start at 2,000 baht.
Rafting: Experience the ultimate rafting expedition! Try white water rafting on fast flowing rapids and down exhilarating and adrenalin filled courses. Most of the rafting activities are done in the Phang Nga area, along mountain rivers fringed with forest. Be prepared to get wet! Contact The Traveller on +66 (0)86 948 8440 for more information.
Phuket Shooting Gallery: You’ll know that you’ve reached your destination, for as soon as you disembark in the car park, you’ll hear the spiteful crack of sporadic gunfire. On arrival the friendly staff immediately furnishes each visitor with ear protectors and safety glasses. You get to choose from an eclectic range of hand guns and rifles in a variety of calibers from .22 up to 9mm. You can also have a go at wiping out clay pigeons with a twelve bore shotgun or you could try your hand at archery – it’s harder than it looks.
There’s Airsoft BB guns for the kids, paintball for adults and an ATV circuit for the adventurous. You want more? There’s more. Elephant trekking, monkey school, cobra show and for those keen on shopping for fabrics, handicraft and other local products check out Kinnaree House, at the front of the gallery.
