Things to do in Phuket

Wings, Water and History. Phuket is a world-famous destination where every year thousands of visitors come to revel in the beach scene, and the unique, casual, free-wheeling social lifestyle. These days ’though, many people are demanding a more varied menu to choose from, and in this respect the island doesn’t disappoint. Here are a few ideas. Enjoy yourselves.

Phuket Thai Hua Museum: The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911, and has now become the Thai Hua Museum serving as a community and exhibition centre for baba arts and culture.

The museum is a two-storey building with the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground floor. Many of the exhibits and artifacts relate to the art and culture of China. Some of the old schoolrooms still remain as they were in the past, with old school desks and photographs of former students.

The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road. It’s open on Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit.

Things to do in PhuketPhuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World: A captivating place. Apart from being a serene natural paradise just to enjoy, the facility has an educational section which is fascinating. There’s a lot to learn about these beautiful and complex insects.

A butterfly garden is very much an observatory, where you’re free to wander in their natural habitat. Here you can learn more about the miraculous miniature world of insects and butterflies. Relax in the garden where there are literally thousands of butterflies filling the air.

Explore the wonderful lives of these small creatures. See collections of beetles, bees, wasps, grasshoppers, termites and ants. Listen to the musical crickets and cicadas, and view insects such as arachnids, scorpions, and giant millipedes, from a safe distance.

The garden covers an area of 1,350 square metres and holds more than 40 species. Walk in among the beautiful flowers and marvel at the thousands of butterflies filling the air, busy seeking pollen or nectar among the tropical blooms. Some may be courting! Did you know that female butterflies secrete hormonal perfumes called pheromones which drive the males mad with desire?

There’s also a small silk museum displaying silk cocoons, traditional weaving equipment and some lovely examples of silk cloth.

Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World is located in Soi Paneung in the Sam Kong area. The garden is a five-minute drive from Tesco Lotus. Take the road towards Phuket City and it’s on the left hand side. There’s a large sign indicating the turning. Entrance for children under 10 years is 150 baht; adults and kids over 10 years pay 300 baht. Open daily from 09:00am until 5pm (last admission). Things to do in PhuketSplash Jungle Water Park: The latest attraction to open is the new Splash Jungle Water Park at West Sands, on Mai Khao Beach near the airport. Set on 1.4 hectares (3.5 acres) within the partially completed West Sand Resort, the maze of adventure begins with the 335 metre Lazy River which surrounds the Wave Pool, Aqua Play Pool and the two premium rides – the Boomerango and the Super Bowl. Alternatively, you can relax in the lgloo Sauna or the Hot Spring Pool. The little ones can explore the Kids’ Aquarium, the Kids’ Slide Pool or multiple water slides of varying heights and speeds.

There are plans to add a Splash bar, Coconut Café, Jungle Deli and retail shops. There’s something for everyone at Splash Jungle making it a great day out, and an unforgettable experience for the whole family. If you want adventure and have a love of tropical Islands, then Splash Jungle is the place to be. So enjoy, get wet and stay cool!
